Sign up as a Liverpool City Stars Volunteer and help our visitors to have a fantastic IFB 2014!

During June and July 2014, the world will come to Liverpool when the city region plays host to the International Festival for Business (IFB 2014), the largest event of its kind in the UK since the Festival of Britain in 1951. The potential benefits for the city region are massive, and, by becoming an IFB 2014 City Stars volunteer, you can play your part in helping to ensure that we make the most of this fantastic opportunity.

You will play a crucial role in shaping a wonderful experience for our guests, who will arrive as visitors but return home as true ambassadors for the city, spreading the word that the Liverpool city region is the perfect place to visit and invest in.

So, if, like us you love Liverpool, Halton, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens, or Wirral, and want to show-off our region, then why not get involved and sign up as an IFB 2014 City Stars volunteer today.

What are we looking for in our volunteers?

There has been an active volunteer community in Liverpool for many years, and since 2008 a group of around 150 volunteers called City Stars, have been supporting volunteering opportunities throughout the city. City Stars is a joint venture between Liverpool ONE and Liverpool City Council.

We believe that it is essential for our volunteers to hold, and live-up to, the following LIVERPOOL values.

  • Loyal: Dependable team members who are committed to our collective mission to transform our guests into ambassadors for the Liverpool City region.
  • Inspirational: Be yourself and inspire others by offering that personal touch when engaging with visitors. It’s your personality that will make the difference!
  • Versatile communicator: Communicating effectively with people from different backgrounds and cultures. Speaking a second language would be a real bonus!
  • Empathy: Being able to put yourself in our guests’ shoes and understanding what makes the difference between a good welcome and a truly great welcome.
  • Respect for others: Regardless of their background, whether they are fellow volunteers or visitors.Make sure that the welcome you offer is consistent.
  • Partnership: Being a team player and understanding that the value of our collective efforts is greater than the sum of our individual contributions.
  • Optimistic: Projecting positivity at all times, always focusing on what you can do, not what you can’t do.
  • Outgoing: Being friendly, sociable, and proactive during all interactions with our visitors.
  • Love the City! Being passionate about the Liverpool City region. During the Festival, you’ll be one of the city’s most important ambassadors!

We require that all IFB 2014 City Stars meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Uphold the LIVERPOOL values as listed above.
  • Attend 1.5 days of training, which is scheduled to take place in late April and throughout May.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK. You will be asked to present evidence of this (e.g., your passport, driving licence, national insurance number card, birth, or adoption certificate, or a letter from Jobcentre Plus) to the co-ordinator at your first training session.
  • Commit to supporting at least five events during the Festival.

If you are in receipt of benefits, you are still eligible to volunteer, but you should seek advice from Jobcentre Plus to ensure that your benefits will not be affected.

What will our volunteers be doing?

As an IFB 2014 City Stars volunteer, there’s a good chance you’ll be the first person a visitor will meet when arriving at a venue, or even the city, for the first time, so you will have a crucial role to play in ensuring that the first impression is a positive one. You will have opportunities to support both IFB 2014 business events as well as events that form part of the associated cultural programme. You can choose the events and locations you’d like to support (on a first-come, first-served basis). You will be expected to greet visitors, provide directions, offer general guidance, and provide details about what’s going on in the city region that day.

As this role will require you to be on your feet for much of the time, it’s important that you are fit and well. More detailed information about what’s involved can be found in the Role Profile PDF below or you can sign-up to become a volunteer here.

Further information about the specific opportunities you can get involved in will be provided through our volunteer portal, which will be updated regularly with details of all volunteering opportunities.

What training will I receive?

All volunteers will need to attend 1.5 days of training, which will include the following:

WorldHost training tailored to the International Festival for Business

This full-day course will equip you with a rounded knowledge of the International Festival for Business and explain how you can make a difference. Your participation in the training will contribute towards the drive to become Great Britain's first WorldHost accredited city region.

The training will provide you with the essential skills required to meet the needs and expectations of international visitors. For those seeking employment, the resulting qualification will be an excellent addition to your CV. Training will take place between 22 April and 31 May at Academy ONE, 2nd Floor, Stanley Buildings, Hanover Street, Liverpool L1 3DN.

You will be able to choose to attend a range of courses, some of which will be conducted at the weekend.

IFB Hub Orientation

This three-hour session will familiarise you with the nerve centre of the Festival: the IFB Hub at Mann Island. You will also learn about the more practical elements of being a volunteer, including more detailed information regarding health and safety and how we will brief and communicate with you. At this session you will also collect your uniform, which you will be required to wear whenever you volunteer.

Orientation will take place between 6 May and 31 May at the IFB Hub, No. 1 Mann Island, Liverpool L3 1BP. There will be a range of sessions to choose from, some of which will be held in the early evening and on Saturday and Sunday.

Sign-up to become a volunteer here and you will be redirected to our volunteer portal where you can book your WorldHost training.
